Top Travel Tips for Nutrition

…and I promise nothing in here is going to say NO TREATS!

Plan for what you need:

Here is my biggest down fall personally when we travel:

I get hungry in between meals and it happens FAST.

It can take us a longer time to figure out where we want to go for meals (often because I like trying to find the best gluten free options wherever we are so we can try fun things like Cinnamon Bun Pancakes) and inevitably I get very cranky because I’m too hungry.

Solution: Snacks. I KNOW THAT SOUNDS TOO EASY or like I’m suggesting you eat MORE. Because it is, and I am.

Bring travel-able snacks for these moments. I love nuts of some kind for this because they have a bit of protein, fat, and fiber that will actually work to hold you over as opposed to spike your blood sugar and just keep you sort of hungry. They also travel well.

Grab a handful (an actual handful is often just the perfect amount in these situations) and enjoy them.

The further you can keep yourself from being ravenous, the safer your over all nutrition habits are going to be on your trip.

Treats and Sweets

I’ve said this before, if you plan for what you want to indulge in when you travel – it really lowers the self judgement on that behavior. You’re not making a “bad in-the-moment decision” or “giving into temptation”. You’re just…following your plan!

There are going to be special things when you travel that will always catch you off guard. That’s okay! If you’re operating with a plan most of the time, these one-off moments will not be your undoing.

Here is an example:

On our recent trip, I just had it in my head that I was DYING for a fun, gluten free, sweet treat that I couldn’t typically find in DC.

Enter: the Cinnamon Bun Pancakes.

Here was my approach:

I had my 30 g of protein FIRST (combo of eggs and a protein shake I had with me).

Then I split the pancakes with Bryan and enjoyed EVERY. SINGLE. BITE.

I mean…look at that thing! Delightful.

Then, we walked all day long, explored, and I didn’t give the pancakes a second thought until I decided to type this up for all of you to prove my point.

As you’re coming into your end of the summer travels my friends, I invite you to give yourself permission to enjoy it.

You don’t have to be “knocked off your plan” by one trip, one meal, or one snack.

You’re never going to be bested by a pancake!

If you’re realizing that you don’t actually have a plan and you need one – then let me know so we can talk about how we can do that together.
